The Synology RackStation RS1626xs+ is a powerful NAS system for businesses that comes with a factory-installed 16GB memory module. Anyone looking to increase the system's performance - for example, for demanding virtual machines, large databases, or intensive multitasking applications - will need to upgrade the memory. This is where many users encounter a problem: Standard DDR4 RDIMM modules are not recognized by the system. The device will no longer boot with these modules installed.

We solved this issue with specially qualified and tested phs memory RAM modules and tested our modules in the RackStation RS1626xs+. Step by step, the memory was first expanded to up to 64GB (maximum RAM according to the manufacturer's specifications). As part of our overRAMing project, 100% compatibility with 128GB (4x 32GB) was also verified.

However, our test was not finished yet. Manufacturer specifications for maximum memory do not always show what is technically possible in reality. This is exactly what our overRAMing project is all about: Our memory experts independently test how much RAM a device can actually handle, regardless of official datasheets. A module only receives the overRAMing label if it has been proven to achieve a higher total capacity than specified by the device manufacturer and if the entire memory capacity can be reliably used by the system.
You can find more information about overRAMing here.

For the Synology RackStation RS1626xs+, Synology officially specifies a maximum of 64GB of memory in the datasheet. As part of our overRAMing project, we additionally tested the device with four 32GB Registered DDR4 modules from our phs memory brand.

The result: The system runs completely stable and reliably with a total of 128GB of memory - twice the manufacturer's specified capacity. The system control panel fully recognizes the installed 128GB. This successfully proves overRAMing for the RS1626xs+.

Before we get into practice, a quick look behind the scenes. RAM (Random Access Memory) serves as your computer’s short-term memory. All currently used programs and data are temporarily stored here so the processor can access them quickly.

If the RAM is insufficient, Windows uses the so-called page file, an area on the hard drive that acts as emergency memory. The problem: even modern SSDs are many times slower than RAM. The result is noticeable delays when switching programs, longer loading times, and an overall sluggish experience.

There is no real reason why a manufacturer would specify a device’s maximum memory with a smaller capacity than what is actually possible.

Our assumption is that manufacturers determine memory specifications based on the available technology at the time of development. Once set, this information may no longer be updated by manufacturers. For example, a laptop may be listed with a maximum of 4GB RAM, while today, 8GB or even 16GB is actually possible.

It could also be that manufacturers do not revise the product data sheet once it’s published, which may lead to confusion regarding the device’s maximum possible memory.

Why can devices be equipped with more memory than what is stated by the manufacturer?

Most of the time, this involves devices originally produced with only 4GB or 8GB of RAM because larger memory modules were either unavailable or prohibitively expensive at the time. Over time, new memory technologies emerge that allow for higher capacities.

For instance, Samsung has released 128GB DDR4 memory modules, enabling hundreds of servers and workstations to now be upgraded with far more RAM than what the manufacturer initially specified.

32 GB RAM in ASRock motherboard J4105-ITX - tested and works perfectly!
In our overRAMing test, we were able to successfully prove that the new motherboards with Gemini Lake processors not only allow a maximum of 8GB as described in the manual. In our tests, memory configurations up to a maximum of 32GB (2x16GB) were extensively tested in the memory endurance test. The RAM upgrade works with all Gemini Lake processors!

While swapping memory modules, we noticed that the ASRock J4105-ITX motherboard BIOS does not always recognize the new memory. In this case, the motherboard does not boot, and the screen remains black.

This issue does not depend on the memory sizes used, as we could reproduce the problem even with 2GB and 4GB memory modules.

As described in the manual under 1.3 Jumper Settings, the solution is the CRLCMOS1 function.

Excerpt from the ASRock manual: CRLCMOS1 allows you to clear the data in the CMOS. The CMOS data includes system configuration information such as system password, date, time, and system setup parameters... Turn off your computer and unplug the power cord. You can then short the CLRCMOS1 solder points with a metal part, such as a paperclip, for 3 seconds...

Once the CMOS was cleared, every memory configuration could be installed, was immediately recognized, and the system booted on the first attempt.
