Error messages when printing documents
If your printer shows any of the following error messages, it may not be able to correctly process the print job. In most cases, the issue is due to the limited internal memory of the printer.
Common Error Messages / Issues
- What does Error 21 mean: Page too complex (Error 21 / Print overrun / Page too complex)?
- What does Error 20 mean: Insufficient memory (Error 20 EM overflow / insufficient memory)?
- What does it mean when the job cannot be stored on the printer?
- How can you prevent the printer from stopping after several copies?
Causes of these Error Messages
The core issue is that the printer has received more data than its available memory (RAM) can hold. This can quickly occur with documents containing too many macros, fonts, or complex graphics. Even seemingly small PDF files can consume several hundred megabytes of printer memory during printing.
Our Recommendation - Expand Printer Memory
If your printer can be upgraded with additional memory, expanding the printer’s RAM is often the most effective way to handle large print files or multiple pages without issues.
Upgrading printer memory is usually straightforward and can be done quickly.
In our online shop, you can find compatible memory for nearly every printer. If your printer is not listed, feel free to contact us.
Alternatives to Expanding Printer Memory
You can delete stored faxes and forms to free up memory, but naturally, you will no longer be able to use these faxes and forms.
To free up memory, you can turn the printer off and back on to delete stored fonts or macros. Here too, you should consider whether you may need the files again later.
Changing software or printer driver settings can ensure that print jobs are less complex. For example, a PostScript printer driver can lead to the creation of complex print files. If necessary, you can print the file using a PCL6 or UPD printer driver.
For issues with PDF documents, you can first update the Adobe software and printer drivers. You can also make changes through Adobe Reader settings to potentially achieve improvements:
– In the File menu under the “Printer” menu item, you can go to “Advanced” and select “Print as image“.
– If you are using printers that only support UPD PS drivers, disable the “Postscript Passthrough” setting. To do this, open “Devices and Printers” on your PC, right-click on the printer (e.g., “HP Universal Printing Postscript”), then select “Printer Properties” and click on the “Device Settings” tab. Under “Installable Options,” locate “Postscript Passthrough,” select “Disabled“, and save the setting by clicking “Apply.”
Of course, it makes sense to solve the problem of insufficient memory by expanding the memory of your printer. To find memory for your printer, simply enter the model number of your printer on phs-memory.com in the search bar and press Enter. We will show you which printer memory fits your printer and the maximum RAM expansion capacity.
