With the Samsung M.2 SSD 950 Pro, you achieve maximum hard drive performance. We show you how to install the M.2 drive on the Lycom PCIe 3.0 adapter, install the drive in the PC, and test the speed of the M.2 SSD compared to a conventional SSD with SATA connection.
The application shown here is of interest to all PC owners who would like to benefit from a faster hard drive than conventional SATA SSDs and do not have an M.2 NVMe slot on their system. The PCIe 3.0 adapter DT-120 from Lycom offers a straightforward solution that can easily be retrofitted in many systems as an addition to an existing SATA hard drive or even as a hard drive replacement. The annoying cable connections in computers are also a thing of the past. In our benchmark test, we were able to demonstrate more than a 7-fold speed of the Samsung M.2 SSD 950 Pro compared to our SSD test drive from OCZ with SATA connection. Our tests also found that using the device driver for M.2 SSD drives provided by Microsoft leads to significantly worse performance.
Therefore, we recommend installing the original device driver from Samsung. This is the only way to utilize the maximum speed of the hard drive.
