What is FB DIMM server memory?

FBDIMM (Fully Buffered Dual Inline Memory Module) server memory is used to enable stable server systems with large memory capacity.

While in DDR2 RDIMM memory modules the register takes over the address lines to relieve the Northbridge, in the FB DIMM technology, the address lines are also managed by the iMB (isolated Memory Buffer). By merging the data lines in FB-DIMM to the iMB, an FB-DIMM places less load on the server than a DDR2 RDIMM memory module.

An FB DIMM has the same number of memory contacts but a different pinout than other DDR2 memory.

ECC or chipkill functions are also integrated into FB DIMM memory to achieve high security for server memory.
