In the notebook and industrial board segment, DDR4 SO-DIMM memory modules were previously only available up to a maximum of 16GB. The RAM with 32GB and 64GB memory capacities were previously only found in the server environment as RDIMM and LRDIMM memory.
Samsung is now the first manufacturer to mass-produce DDR4 32GB SO-DIMM RAM memory using the 10Nm manufacturing process. The DDR4 SO-DIMMs are each equipped with eight chips on the front and back. If, for example, two 32GB (total 64GB) memory modules are installed in the notebook, the two memory modules consume less than 4.6W in active mode and no more than 1.4W in idle mode. This means that power consumption can be reduced by a whopping 39% compared to conventional 16GB RAM memories from Samsung.
This reduction in power consumption has a particularly positive effect on heat development in the device itself, but also on the battery life of mobile devices.
The new Samsung 16Gbit DRAM memory is based on a 10Nm class process technology. The previous memory chips, each with 8GBit capacity, were manufactured by Samsung using an 18Nm process.
OverRAMing - Many notebooks can now be expanded to 32GB, 64GB or 128GB
Numerous new processors from Intel and AMD already support the new 32GB DDR4 SO-DIMM memory modules. However, very few manufacturers will change their data sheets and technical documentation with regard to RAM. The new Samsung 32GB SO-DIMM memory modules were released today for more than 6,000 devices in the speicher.de store.
