Is there a RAM memory slot in the QNAP series TS-x64, TS-x64U, and TS-x64eU?

Qnap TS x64 Serie

Reports frequently appear in various forums that the QNAP TS-464-8GB and other drives from the QNAP series TS-x64, TS-x64U, and TS-x64eU are not upgradeable in the standard configuration of 8GB from the factory. The rumor persists that there are two different model variants.

Test Example - QNAP TS-464-8G

We investigated this case in detail using the QNAP TS-464-8G as an example. In May 2023, we demonstrated that the RAM is not soldered on the QNAP-TS-464-8G. Instead, the QNAP TS-464-8G has two expansion slots for memory modules, just like its sibling model TS-464-4GB with 4GB.

Our extensive testing showed that contrary to QNAP’s statements, the QNAP TS-464-8G can be upgraded to 64GB (2x32GB). In our test, we equipped both memory slots with a 32GB phs memory RAM module each. The very first boot process took a little longer, but the device started up without any issues. In the system status of the NAS, the full 64GB are displayed. Even after installing Docker applications, where the RAM was nearly fully utilized, no problems were observed. This is thus referred to as overRAMing.

Based on numerous customer feedback, we can now confirm that not only the QNAP TS-464-8GB but also all other devices from the same model and series, which are listed in QNAP’s technical documentation with 8GB of RAM from the factory and are allegedly not upgradeable, have two memory slots. Thus, an upgrade to 64GB with two 32GB memory expansions is also possible here.

Are there different model variants for the TS-x64, TS-x64U, and TS-x64eU series?

So far, we have successfully upgraded hundreds of devices from these model series, which were allegedly not equipped with RAM expansion slots and came with 8GB RAM from the factory. So far, there has been not a single customer report of the 8GB RAM on the motherboard being soldered or of no RAM slots being present. Our experience indicates that the rumors about different motherboard versions with the same model designations are unfounded. Instead, we can confirm that the same motherboard has always been installed in all models.
